'Wicked' to In Memoriam omissions: Who got snubbed at Oscars
What's the story
The 97th Academy Awards, which were held on Sunday (US time), was a night of unexpected twists and turns.
The biggest surprise was when the 25-year-old actor Mikey Madison won the Best Actress award for her role in the screwball drama Anora, beating the frontrunner Demi Moore (The Substance).
While Anora celebrated a successful night overall, winning five Oscars, major snubs also shaped the evening.
Here's the list.
Award snubs
'Nosferatu' and 'A Complete Unknown' left empty-handed
Despite being nominated for several awards, both Nosferatu and A Complete Unknown went home empty-handed.
The gothic horror film, written and directed by Robert Eggers, was nominated in four categories, including cinematography, costume design, makeup & hair styling, and production design.
Meanwhile, the Timothee Chalamet-led Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown received eight nominations but didn't win anything.
Their lack of success only added to the night's surprises.
Surprise
'I'm Still Here' won Best International Feature over 'Emilia Pérez'
With Emilia Pérez boasting 13 nominations compared to just three for I'm Still Here, the odds seemed in favor of the former clinching the Best International Feature Oscar.
However, to Brazil's delight, I'm Still Here emerged victorious.
The outcome has only fueled speculation that the controversy surrounding lead actor Karla Sofía Gascón may have played a role in Emilia Pérez's snub.
Gascón received a massive backlash over resurfaced racist and Islamophobic posts from her X account.
Disappointments
Diane Warren's losing streak continues
Diane Warren faced yet another disappointment at the 97th Academy Awards.
Despite earning her 16th nomination for Best Original Song—this time for The Journey from Six Triple Eight—Warren once again fell short of securing the coveted statuette.
Meanwhile, Wicked fans had their share of disappointment as well.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have yet to secure any Best Actress/Best Supporting Actress wins this awards season, while director Jon Chu has largely been overlooked—despite the film earning 10 Oscar nominations.
In Memoriam segment
Notable names left out of the Oscars's In Memoriam segment
Oscars saw the return of its infamous snubs—particularly in the In Memoriam segment.
While the tribute honored legendary figures such as David Lynch, James Earl Jones, and Donald Sutherland, several notable names were left out. Harriet the Spy actor Michelle Trachtenberg—who passed away just a few days ago—was not included.
Other omissions included actors Tony Todd, Chance Perdomo, Alain Delon, and Tony Roberts.
However, Gene Hackman—who was found dead alongside his wife last week—received a special tribute from Morgan Freeman.
