'Men don't want to be men': Salman criticizes modern masculinity
Bollywood actor Salman Khan recently shared his thoughts on evolving notions of masculinity during the trailer launch event of the docu-series Angry Young Men. The series, which is produced by Salman Khan Films, Excel Entertainment, and Tiger Baby Films, explores the lives and works of legendary screenwriters Salim Khan-Javed Akhtar. At the event, Khan praised his father Salim, and Akhtar for their enduring impact on Indian cinema.
'A lot of writers, write. Salim-Javed put their life experiences...'
Khan commended Salim-Javed for their distinctive style of scriptwriting, which he believes sets them apart from other writers. "A lot of writers, (simply) write. Salim-Javed put their life experiences (in their writings), what they've learned from people around them, what they've seen, what their parents have taught them, and the way their children have grown up," he said. "The rest of the writers take it from the cinema and put it back in the cinema," he said.
'They are still men and want to be men': Khan
Khan also expressed his views on changing perceptions of masculinity, stating that men in the current generation do not want to be men anymore. He said, "God makes men, they don't want to be men anymore...He makes a lot of men," he said, adding, "But this generation, they don't want to be men." "These two here, my father and Javed Sahab, they are men, they are still men and they want to be men."
Khan also recalled the criticism faced by Salim-Javed
Further, Khan also reflected on the criticism that Salim-Javed faced despite their success in the industry. He said, "Two people giving hits after hits...Only those people who Salim-Javed didn't work with were the ones who called them mad." To note, Angry Young Men is a three-part documentary series that delves into the revolutionary storytelling of Salim-Javed, the screenwriting duo behind iconic blockbusters like Zanjeer, Sholay, and Deewar. The series is set to premiere on Prime Video on August 20.
