'To break perception...'—Kirti Kulhari on starring in 'Badass Ravi Kumar'
What's the story
Kirti Kulhari, who has starred in powerful dramas like Shaitaan (2011), Pink (2016) and Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors (2020), recently entered new territory with the action comedy Badass Ravi Kumar.
The film, directed by Keith Gomes and co-starring Himesh Reshammiya, is a departure from Kulhari's usual repertoire.
In a recent interview with Mid-Day, she revealed this is the first time she has faced trolling in her career.
Casting surprise
Kulhari's initial reaction and Reshammiya's assurance
Kulhari confessed she was taken aback when she was offered the role in Badass Ravi Kumar.
She said, "I was shocked. But Himesh told me, 'I need an actor for this role.' I was flattered that he thought of me for his film."
Coincidentally, her short bob hairstyle then was another reason Reshammiya was convinced she would be perfect for the glamorous assassin's part.
Role acceptance
Kulhari embraced new role to challenge perceptions
Despite knowing her action comedy avatar would shock audiences, Kulhari viewed it as an interesting opportunity.
"I am seen as a serious actor. But I realized that I didn't want any strict notions about me, not just from the audience but also myself."
"I wanted to shatter any judgment I harbored for spoof films. I also wanted to break the perception I had of myself as an actor."
Audience feedback
Kulhari's reaction to mixed responses for 'Badass Ravi Kumar'
After Badass Ravi Kumar dropped, Kulhari was showered with praises and also trolled.
She said, "People are telling me that I'm looking hot. I'm surprised by it because I had a glam look in Four More Shots Please!"
"There are also many comments where people have criticized me. In fact, this is the first time in my career that I have been trolled."
"I asked myself if I was at ease receiving criticism and the answer was yes."
