We almost had a female Juggernaut in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film Deadpool & Wolverine, one of 2024's most successful blockbusters, featured several surprise appearances from beloved characters. Among these were Channing Tatum's Gambit, Wesley Snipes's Blade, and Jennifer Garner's Elektra. However, recent concept art by David Masson San Gabriel revealed that the film almost included a gender-swapped version of the notorious X-Men villain Juggernaut.
Concept art showcased female Juggernaut's potential look
The concept art, shared by Gabriel on Instagram, depicted a female version of Cain Marko/Juggernaut. The design was inspired by the costume worn by Vinnie Jones in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand. Despite this innovative idea, the final film featured a male Juggernaut portrayed by Aaron W Reed. Gabriel captioned his post, "I was asked to do a concept of juggernaut from x3 but as a woman, it didn't end up in the movie."
Jones's return as Juggernaut was uncertain
Before the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, there was speculation about whether Jones would reprise his role as Juggernaut. Adding to this uncertainty, Jones himself stated in an interview that he was too expensive to rehire. He told Yahoo! Movies UK, "Funnily enough I just got asked to do Deadpool... and I spoke to the director and I just said it's such a drama putting that suit on mentally and physically."
Jones expressed his love for 'Deadpool' despite not returning
Jones further elaborated on the challenges of wearing the Juggernaut suit, stating it was mentally and physically taxing. He revealed that he couldn't do anything all day except drink through a straw while in costume. Despite these difficulties, Jones expressed his love for Deadpool, calling it one of his favorite movies. However, due to budget constraints, they were unable to reach an agreement for his return in the suit.
'Deadpool & Wolverine' featured star-studded cast and crew
In Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds reprised his role as Deadpool alongside Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The film also starred Matthew Macfadyen, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapicic, Brianna Hildebrand, Rob Delaney, and Lewis Tan. It was produced by Kevin Feige, Reynolds himself (also the co-writer), Shawn Levy (also the director), and Lauren Shuler Donner. The executive producers included Louis D'Esposito, among others.
