'Black Mirror 7': Why 'USS Callister' will have sequel episode
The seventh season of Netflix's popular anthology series, Black Mirror, will feature the show's first-ever sequel episode. The upcoming season will revisit the USS Callister storyline from Season 4, which became a fan-favorite and won four Emmy Awards. In an exclusive interview with Collider at Netflix's Geeked Week, series creator Charlie Brooker discussed why only this episode was chosen for a sequel.
'USS Callister' sequel: A natural choice
USS Callister was a standout episode from Black Mirror's fourth season, featuring a star-studded cast including Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, Billy Magnussen, Michaela Coel, Milanka Brooks, Osy Ikhile, and Paul G. Raymond. The episode followed the crew of the USS Callister as they navigated a diabolical artificial world created by their abusive captain, Robert Daly (Plemons). Brooker explained that the sequel was a natural choice due to the characters and the open-ended conclusion of the original episode.
Brooker on 'USS Callister' sequel
Brooker said, "When we first did it, we were like, 'Oh, this could [work].' A) We love the characters and the cast were so great. The way it ended, it kind of ended with a new chapter starting for them — because they flew through a wormhole off Daly's computer, and found themselves in this infinitely generated video game universe." "It felt natural to pick it up...and it was something we were wanting to do for a long time."
'Black Mirror' Season 7 reunites key creatives
For the seventh season of Black Mirror, Brooker has assembled a team of key creatives from previous seasons. This includes Will Bridges, who co-wrote the original USS Callister episode, Bekka Bowling, and Bisha K. Ali, who co-wrote Demon 79 in the last season. The upcoming season will have six new episodes with a stellar cast including Awkwafina, Emma Corrin, Issa Rae, Paul Giamatti, Peter Capaldi, and Rashida Jones.
