'Fantastic Beasts': Where is the franchise headed next?
'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' is the second installation in the Harry Potter spin-off franchise, based on JK Rowling's works. Although it opened to mixed critical reviews, it is dominating global box offices, making $253 million over the weekend. With plans for the third film in the 5 part franchise already underway, we take a look at possible stories the franchise could explore.
What is 'Crimes of Grindelwald' about?
Directed by David Yates, the second film follows Grindelwald's rise to power and consolidation of followers. Newt Scamander, the protagonist, is forced to choose sides after encountering the dark wizard during his quest to track down Credence Lestrange. Credence, a powerful Obscurus, is the object of attention in this film, with both Grindelwald and Dumbledore trying to battle each other by winning Credence's loyalty.
Timeline of the franchise and story progression
The 5 part franchise spans from 1926 to 1945. Significantly, the last year marks not only the end of World War II but also the year of the most famous magical duel in history between Grindelwald and Dumbledore at the former's fortress in Nurmengard, Austria. Knowing the franchise's timeline and plot points 'Crimes of Grindelwald' reveals, we can guess where the franchise is headed.
What could the next film show us?
While the final confrontation between Dumbledore and Grindelwald will be in the fifth film, the third part could show a face-off after Dumbledore breaks the pendant's magic. Aurelius' magical powers will be another major point. Jamie Campbell Bower and Toby Regbo from 'Deathly Hallows' will reprise their roles as young Grindelwald and Dumbledore. We could see their early friendship and quest for power.
Sow the seeds and watch them grow
The movie revealed some important details that could shape the franchise's future. Newt stole a pendant with Grindelwald and Dumbledore's blood. Presumably, their blood pact was preventing Dumbledore from making a move against Grindelwald. Another big reveal was Credence's identity as Aurelius Dumbledore, brother to our beloved professor, Albus. Notably, the film also introduced Nagini, a Maledictus who would later infamously become Voldemort's Horcrux.
Other points that could arise
Notably, the third film could explore Nagini's character progression. We could see a young Aberforth, Albus' elder brother, return to clear the air surrounding the mysterious sibling Aurelius. It would also be interesting if the film dealt with WWII's effects on the magical world.
A possible plot hole in Rowling's universe?
Potter fans know Dumbledore siblings include Aberforth, Albus and dead sister Ariana. Possibly Ariana, the original Obscurus, manifested her dark persona as Aurelius. After Ariana killed their mother in 1899 and with their father imprisoned in Azkaban, Aurelius' 1904 birth does not tie in chronologically. However, Aurelius is revealed to have a phoenix, a mythical bird drawn to Dumbledore, which seemingly proves his lineage.
Trust in JK Rowling's creative capacity
Having introduced several important strands of information, coupled with Rowling's immaculate universe creation, the Aurelius plot hole will most likely be explained further in the remaining films. Either way, the future looks magical for the 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise and we cannot wait for part three.
