When Aamir said he produced 'Laapataa Ladies' out of 'fear'
Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao and co-produced by Aamir Khan, has been selected as India's entry for the Oscars 2025 for the Best Foreign Film category. Released in March, it features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Ravi Kishan, and beat titles like Animal and Kalki 2898 AD to achieve this feat. Did you know Khan's decision to back the comedy-drama was inspired by "fear"? Here's what he said.
Khan's decision to produce 'Laapataa Ladies'
In August, Khan and Rao conversed with Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud after a special screening of the drama at the Supreme Court. At the event, Khan had said that "fear" and "desire" had motivated him to produce the film. "During Covid at the age of 56, I realized this is [my career's last leg]. I might have 15 more years of active work left and I wanted to give back."
Khan's future plans as a producer
Khan expressed his desire to produce more films like LL in the future. "I could do one film a year but as a producer I can back multiple stories. Laapataa Ladies is the first step in that direction. I want to promote this kind of talent and hope to produce four to five films a year so that we can see more such movies." Earlier, Khan has backed films like Peepli Live, Dhobi Ghat, and Secret Superstar, among others.
'Laapataa Ladies' defeated several popular films in the Oscars race
Laapataa Ladies was chosen among a pool of 29 movies, including Joram, Srikanth, Maidaan, Chandu Champion, Sam Bahadur, and Kill, among others. It was earlier predicted that Payal Kapadia's Cannes winner All We Imagine as Light may be chosen, but Laapataa Ladies eventually emerged victorious. The comedy-drama is streaming on Netflix.
