The second season of Netflix's popular series Wednesday is set to introduce a new character from the iconic Addams family, Grandmama, who will be portrayed by Joanna Lumley. This addition follows the departure of two previous characters, Xavier and Yoko. Despite these exits, the show continues to expand its ensemble with both new and existing characters from the franchise. The introduction of Grandmama in Season 2 will further expand the Addams family tree and finally answer an age-old doubt.
Historical confusion surrounds Grandmama
There is a significant decision to be made regarding Grandmama's identity due to historical confusion across various adaptations of The Addams Family. Netflix has yet to reveal whether Grandmama will be depicted as an Addams or a Frump. Over the years, different versions of The Addams Family have portrayed her as either Gomez's mother or Morticia's mother. Charles Addams's original cartoons depicted her as Gomez's mother, but this portrayal has not been consistent across all screen adaptations.
Grandmama has consistently switched between Addams and Frump
In the 1964 Addams Family sitcom, Grandmama was introduced as Gomez's mother with the surname "Addams." However, Charles had previously referred to her as "Granny Frump," leading to "Frump" becoming Morticia's maiden name once the show premiered. Later on, Morticia's mother was introduced as Granny Frump in the sitcom, establishing Grandmama and Granny Frump as separate characters.
Grandmama's role in recent Addams Family movies
The relationship between Grandmama and Morticia and Gomez was altered in The Addams Family movies released in 1991 and 1993. In these films, Grandmama was introduced as Morticia's mother since Gomez's parents were deceased. However, in the 2019 and 2021 animated Addams Family movies, Grandmama was once again portrayed as the mother of Gomez and Fester, with Granny Frump being introduced as Morticia's mother.
What could be Grandmama's role in Netflix's 'Wednesday'?
Given the focus of Netflix's Wednesday series is on the Addams family and their ancestors, it seems likely that Grandmama will be depicted as Gomez and Fester's mother. The show has already established a long history of the Addamses at Nevermore Academy, suggesting that Grandmama may have attended the school before Gomez and Wednesday. Hints of Grandmama's introduction were already present in Season 1's flashbacks to young Wednesday's birthday party, where a model of Grandmama was seen on the cake.
