Vikram cannot forget night his play was booed for 15-minutes!
Tamil cinema's beloved star Chiyaan Vikram recently shared a poignant memory from his college days, recalling a night that started with him being booed during a play and ended with a life-altering accident. The actor, known for his physical transformations akin to Hollywood's Christian Bale, spoke about this incident during an appearance on IMDb's Icons Only segment. Here are more details.
Vikram's college play was initially met with boos
Vikram recounted his experience of performing in a college play titled Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer. The unique concept of the play, which was performed in complete darkness, initially led to the audience booing the actors. "For the first 10-15 minutes, the play's in darkness. So we were booed and then, after the 15th minute, half the audience started saying 'shhh,' while the other half continued booing." "And then they also started getting involved...began laughing...it became such a huge hit."
Play's success turned tragic with life-altering accident
Despite the initial negative response, Vikram's play eventually became a huge hit. However, the same night took a tragic turn when the actor met with an accident that left him bedridden for three years. "I had 23 surgeries. The doctor said you'll never be able to walk again, but I had this dream of becoming an actor. The doctor said I wouldn't be able to walk, but I decided to run. So I tried swimming and everything."
Vikram's physical transformations for roles risked permanent damage
Vikram's dedication to his craft is evident in the drastic physical transformations he has undergone for various roles. However, these changes have not been without risks. In a previous interview with Pinkvilla, he revealed that some of these transformations came dangerously close to causing permanent damage to his body. For instance, while preparing for his role in Kasi, Vikram risked developing a squint eye.
'I wanted to get down to 50kg...'
Vikram also shared his experience of drastically losing weight for the movie I. "My weight got down to 52kg at that time from 86kg. I wanted to get down to 50kg but my doctor said, 'Go easy let's not get excited for this because...if main organ fails then it may be a problem,'" he said. Despite the challenges he has faced, Vikram continues to shine. His latest movie, Thangalaan has crossed the ₹100cr mark at the global box office.
