Vijay Sethupathi quietly helps one lakh Puducherry-based people get jobs
Vijay Sethupathi's benevolent act is winning hearts all over. The Tamil star has reportedly helped over a lakh people based in Puducherry secure employment via an NGO named Vallallar Velai Vaaipu Sevai Iyakkam. This heartwarming update was shared by an activist named Veerarahavan, who runs the non-profit organization. The duo teamed up after Veerarahavan appeared on a talk show that was hosted by Sethupathi.
Why does this story matter?
Sethupathi, lovingly called Makkal Selvan (People's Treasure), is known for his philanthropy. In 2020, he had provided financial aid for his co-actor who was paralyzed after a stroke. Last year, he donated Rs. 25 lakh to the Tamil Nadu CM Relief Fund to fight the pandemic. The reticent actor prefers to not publicize his social work, but people reveal them out of gratitude—like Veerarahavan.
How did it all start?
It all started in 2016, when Veerarahavan, a former central government school teacher, started helping the unemployed youth on a part-time basis through three WhatsApp Groups. In three years, he assisted 3,300 people in finding employment. Due to this noble gesture, he was invited to Namma Ooru Hero (Our Village's Hero), a talk show hosted by Sethupathi that aired on Sun TV in 2019.
How did Veerarahavan's initiative gain traction?
"After the show ended, Vijay Sethupathi told me that he'd do everything possible to help me provide my service on a full-time basis," said Veerarahavan, who soon resigned from his job. Once his episode aired, he was "flooded with calls" from firms looking to hire people and Veerarahavan brought this to Sethupathi's attention. "He immediately helped me set up a proper office in Puducherry."
This is how Sethupathi helped
"A proper service organization called the Vallallar Velai Vaaipu Sevai Iyakkam came into existence (after Sethupathi's help)," Veerarahavan added. Sethupathi, meanwhile, continuously paid salaries of Veerarahavan and his employees "every month on time." "As a result, both companies looking for employees and youngsters looking for employment stood to gain. As of March 20, 1,00,133 educated youngsters have benefited from our services and...found suitable employment."
Upcoming projects of Sethupathi
Meanwhile, on the work front, Sethupathi was last seen in a cameo in the Tamil film Kadaisi Vivasayi. He has a huge line-up of films awaiting release, including the Bollywood project Mumbaikar and Tamil movie Vikram alongside Kamal Haasan and Fahadh Faasil. The latter is set to release on June 3. He also has Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal, co-starring Nayanthara and Samantha Ruth Prabhu.
