'Chhaava': How Vicky Kaushal prepared for career's 'toughest' role
What's the story
Vicky Kaushal, who is busy promoting his upcoming film Chhaava, has called his role the "toughest" of his career.
The actor plays the role of the valiant Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in the film.
In a recent interview on Radio Nasha, he shared that director Laxman Utekar was adamant about him getting an authentic warrior look before they started shooting.
The movie will release on February 14.
Preparation
Kaushal's physical transformation and training for 'Chhaava'
Kaushal revealed that he had to bulk up 25kg of muscle for the part, a journey that took him seven months.
He also had to learn horse riding, finish sword training, and acting fighting.
"Laxman sir was very clear that till the time you don't get that look...I won't start the film. He told me, 'I refuse to cheat. I won't use VFX.'"
Dedication
Kaushal's extensive preparation included physical appearance and stunts
Apart from bulking up, Kaushal also had to grow his hair and beard. "I had to grow my hair, beard and build the body and that took time before we even began the shooting of the film."
He also added that no shortcuts were taken during the filming, with 2K junior artists and 500 of India's best stuntmen on set.
Co-star's role
Kaushal praised Akshaye Khanna's transformation in 'Chhaava'
In Chhaava, Akshaye Khanna plays Aurangzeb.
Kaushal was amazed by Khanna's transformation for the character and said he was "totally surprised" when he saw photos of his look.
"When I actually saw him in the look on the set, with his demeanor and all, it was incredible."
The film also stars Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, Sambhaji Maharaj's wife.
The historical drama was earlier supposed to be released in December but was pushed to avoid a clash with Pushpa 2.
