KG Jayan, a celebrated figure in the world of Carnatic music, reportedly died early Tuesday morning. He was 89. The maestro breathed his last at his residence in Tripunithura, located in Kerala's Ernakulam district. Jayan had been grappling with various health issues and was undergoing treatment for multiple conditions. Recognized with the prestigious Padma Shri award, he leaves behind a legacy of over 1,000 compositions. May he rest in peace.
Jayan's early life and musical journey
Born on November 21, 1934, Jayan and his twin brother KG Vijayan—renowned as the Jaya-Vijaya duo—were the third and fourth sons of the late Gopalan Thanthrikal and the late Narayani Amma. Their journey commenced with their arangettam, which took place at the Kumaranalloor Devi Temple when they were just nine. Under the guidance of Raman Bhagavathar and later Mavelikkara Radhakrishna Iyer, they honed their skills.
Jayan's significant contributions to Malayalam music
Following their schooling, the twins pursued the Ganabhooshanam course at the esteemed Swathi Thirunal College of Music in Thiruvananthapuram. Subsequently, they received advanced training from eminent figures in Carnatic music such as the Alathur brothers, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, and M. Balamuralikrishna. Their tutelage under Chembai marked a significant turning point as they began composing and performing their own songs under his guidance.
Jayan's collaborations and accolades in music
The Jaya-Vijaya duo collaborated with musical icons like KJ Yesudas and P Leela, further enhancing their popularity among music lovers. Their song Ishta Daivame Swami, sung by Leela, was the first Malayalam devotional song performed by a woman. Jayan's devotional songs dedicated to Lord Ayyappa earned him considerable acclaim. His contributions to music were recognized with prestigious awards such as the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award, Harivarasanam Award, and the Padma Shri in 2019.
Jayan is survived by his two sons
Per reports, Jayan is survived by two sons, Manoj and Biju K Jayan. His wife Sarojini predeceased him a few years ago. The last rites of the esteemed musician will be performed on Wednesday. His son Manoj is a well-known actor in the Malayalam film industry, carrying forward his father's legacy in the world of arts. Meanwhile, Jayan's chart-topping hits continue to be cherished by music lovers even today, demonstrating his timeless appeal.
