'Very much alive': Susan Downey on 'Sherlock Holmes 3'
As Amazon Prime Video works on its own version of the iconic Sherlock Holmes, Susan Downey has shared a positive update on Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes 3. Speaking with Screen Rant, Downey Jr.'s wife and producer Susan addressed the progress of the third Sherlock Holmes film. She stated that the project is still "very much alive in our hearts."
Why does this story matter?
To recall, Downey Jr. introduced his interpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective with the namesake 2009 film, earning him a Golden Globe for Best Actor. The success of the movie paved the way for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011, which also achieved commercial success. The franchise has earned over $543M in global box office revenue. However, despite plans for a third installment, Sherlock Holmes 3 has faced delays for various reasons.
'We do have some things in the works...'
Susan expressed optimism about the future of Sherlock Holmes 3, stating, "I mean, look, no, there's no update, other than it's still very much alive in our hearts." "Every day we talk about, 'What is the best next version of that?' Because anytime I see Robert and Jude together...I'm just like, 'Can I get these guys back on screen together?' It's magic." "There needs to be a really strong reason...we do have some things in the works," she added.
Challenges and changes in 'Sherlock Holmes 3' development
It's worth noting that the development of Sherlock Holmes 3 has faced numerous challenges over the past decade, including changes in scriptwriters and directors. Guy Ritchie, who directed the first two movies, has been replaced by Rocketman's Dexter Fletcher. Despite setbacks due to creative reshuffling and the COVID-19 pandemic, Susan and producer Amanda Burrell have consistently assured that the project remains a priority.
Downey Jr.'s availability and recent accolades
The timing appears favorable for Sherlock Holmes 3, as previous delays were due to Downey Jr.'s commitments with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With his tenure ending with 2019's Avengers: Endgame, he should have more availability for another significant project like the Sherlock Holmes movies. Furthermore, Downey Jr.'s recent Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor in Oppenheimer and acclaim in HBO's The Sympathizer make this an opportune time for him to return to a fan-favorite role.
