Fans may get to see Venom v/s Spider-Man soon
The 'Venom' movie which is coming out on October 5, was expected to be R-rated. The trailer showed enough violence, and comic lore portrays Venom as a pretty dark character. Fans had started to anticipate a violent extravaganza. However, it looks like they might be disappointed. Reportedly, Sony has decided to lighten the tone of the movie and is going for a PG-13 rating.
The darkness in Eddie Brock
Despite Eddie Brock's character having tones of darkness every time the Venom symbiote takes over, the film will not show Brock as a villain. Since comic lore has often portrayed Venom as an anti-hero, Sony is headed in that direction as well. Their aim is to make family-friendly Venom movies, in hopes of orchestrating a face-off between Venom and Spider-Man in the future.
Venom and Spider-Man in movies and comics
Venom is one of Spider-Man's most popular villains. The two have faced off a number of times in the comics. Venom first appeared in comics in 1984. The film franchise first saw the appearance of Venom in Spider-Man 3, played by Topher Grace.
But didn't Marvel buy the rights to Spider-Man?
Some fans might ask why is Sony hoping for a Venom, Spider-Man face-off when Marvel bought the rights to Spider-Man in 2015. Sony's deal ensured Marvel had their own version of Spidey in the MCU. Sony retained distribution rights and creative control. This means Sony can make movies based on Spider-Man characters and Spidey can appear in the Venom movie or other Spider-Man movies.
Who will be the webslinger?
While Sony's deal of having Spider-Man appear in their movies is exciting to fans, it raises a few questions. Will Marvel's casting choice Tom Holland retain the role of Spider-Man, or will we see a different webslinger in Sony's films? Only time will tell.
It's not really hard to find balance in films
While Sony is playing it extremely safe by making a PG-13 movie, we are reminded of the X-Men franchise. They have successfully balanced plenty of PG-13 films with the gorier R-rated 'Logan' and 'Deadpool'. The franchise has also successfully, orchestrated Deadpool and X-Men crossovers. Maybe Sony should have given fans what they desired, a movie that brought out the chaotic evil of the symbiote.
