'Venom: Let There Be Carnage' release delayed to September
The theatrical release of the much-anticipated Venom: Let There Be Carnage has been delayed yet again. Sony Pictures has announced that the film will now be released on September 17 and not in June. Venom: Let There Be Carnage will hence avoid a box office clash with the Fast and Furious sequel F9, which is now set for a June 25 release. Here's more
The movie is a sequel to Tom Hardy starrer 'Venom'
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a sequel to the Tom Hardy starrer Venom that released in 2018. The original Venom was extremely liked by fans and critics. In that, Hardy played journalist Eddie Brock and the titular role. The sequel would see Hardy again, along with Woody Harrelson (Cletus Kasady/Carnage), Michelle Williams (Anne Weying), Reid Scott (Dr. Dan Lewis), and Naomie Harris (Shriek).
Release dates of this tentpole got changed twice already
The Andy Serkis directorial has been postponed several times due to the coronavirus pandemic. The tentpole was originally set for release last year in October. The date was moved to June 25 this year, but the release has now been scheduled for September 17. Even though movie theaters have slowly started opening up, business is still slow, hence the reason for the delay.
Stakes are high, 'Venom' earned more than $856 million globally
The original Venom earned more than $856 million globally, so the stakes with the sequel are even higher. Its director, Serkis, is best known for his computer-generated character, Gollum, on The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Kelly Marcel, who wrote Saving Mr. Banks (2013) and Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), worked on the screenplay for the sequel.
Harrelson's character is set to wreak havoc in the sequel
Harrelson's character made a brief appearance as Cletus Kasady at the end of Venom, so that he could be introduced as Carnage, the villain, in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, seamlessly. News has it that this Columbia Pictures product will focus on the symbiotic relationship between Brock and Venom, and how they work together as the anti-hero to save the world from Carnage.
