Varun Dhawan will lead 'Border 2' with Sunny Deol
Varun Dhawan is the latest addition to the star-studded cast of Bollywood's upcoming war epic, Border 2. Although the news was circulating for a while, the development is confirmed now. He will be sharing screen space with veteran actor Sunny Deol, who is reprising his role from the original film. The sequel is set to be directed by Anurag Singh, known for his work on Kesari (2019), a film centered around the Battle of Saragarhi.
'Border 2' is a sequel to the 1997 blockbuster
Border 2 is a follow-up to JP Dutta's 1997 hit film, Border. The original movie featured Deol in a leading role and depicted the events of the 1971 Indo-Pak war along the Longewala border region. In this historical conflict, a small battalion of Indian soldiers bravely faced off against a large Pakistani strike force. The sequel aims to continue this narrative of courage and resilience. Deol welcomed Dhawan to the production with a social media post on Friday.
'Border 2' is set for a Republic Day release
The production of Border 2 is being handled by Gulshan Kumar and T-Series, in collaboration with Dutta's JP Films. The film is slated for release on January 23, 2026, aligning with the Republic Day holiday period in India. This strategic release date underscores the film's patriotic theme and its tribute to India's military history.
Dhawan and Deol's recent ventures
Dhawan, known for his roles in Bawaal and Bhediya, is also set to appear in the upcoming Prime Video series Citadel: Honey Bunny. On the other hand, Deol enjoyed significant box office success with Gadar 2 in 2023. Their combined star power is expected to contribute significantly to the anticipation and potential success of Border 2.
Dutta's expertise in war films
Dutta is renowned for his expertise in directing war films. After initially focusing on stories about western India's Rajput community, he shifted his attention to military-themed movies with Border. His other notable works include LOC: Kargil (2003), a recreation of the 1999 Kargil War, and Paltan (2018), set during the 1967 India-China border clash.
