'Tumbbad' director confirms exit from sequel; announces new project
Rahi Anil Barve, the director of the critically acclaimed horror film Tumbbad, has announced his departure from the sequel. The news comes shortly after the re-release of Tumbbad, which concluded with a teaser for a follow-up. Despite his exit, Barve expressed confidence in producer-actor Sohum Shah and co-director Adesh Prasad's ability to successfully helm Tumbbad 2.
Barve's statement on social media
Barve took to social media on Saturday to share his decision. He wrote, "For decades, I have worked on this insane trilogy with many producers changing in between. First was the greed of patriarchy (Tumbbad). My personal and much darker version of father, son and the holy ghost." He added that he plans to start production on Pahadpangira in March 2025 and will reveal details about the project in the coming months.
Shah and Prasad respond to Barve's announcement
Shah responded to Barve's post, saying, "Congratulations mere bhai (my brother) for Gulkanda and Raktabrahmand or jaldi sai shuru kar de (start soon) pahadpangira. Maza aayega (it'll be fun)." Barve thanked Shah and assured him of his continued support. Prasad also expressed his gratitude to Barve, saying, "My heart fills up with so much love, pride and excitement to see all your dreams finally coming true."
'Tumbbad's re-release and upcoming projects for Barve
Tumbbad's re-release has been a commercial success and the film has passed its initial earnings from its 2018 release. The film, produced by Sohum Shah Films and presented by Aanand L Rai's Colour Yellow Productions, delves into themes of greed and obsession. Meanwhile, Barve is currently working on the ambitious web series Gulkanda Tales and Rakt Bramhand, both produced and co-written by Raj & DK.
