'Tumbbad' re-release shatters records; earns ₹25.8cr by Day 11
The re-release of Tumbbad, a folk horror thriller directed by Rahi Anil Barve and starring Sohum Shah, has been a resounding success at the box office. Despite initially underperforming in its original 2018 release, the film has made a remarkable comeback since its re-launch on September 13. It has consistently grossed over ₹1 crore daily for 11 days - a feat it only achieved twice during its first run.
'Tumbbad' set to become highest-grossing re-release of 21st century
In just 11 days since its re-release, Tumbbad has grossed around ₹25.75 crore (₹21.75 crore net) and is poised to surpass Thalapathy Vijay's Ghilli (approximately ₹26 crore gross) during its 12th day. This will make it the highest-grossing re-release in India for the 21st century, according to Sacnilk. Alongside Ghilli, Tumbbad is one of only two films to exceed the ₹20 crore gross mark in their re-runs at the Indian box office.
'Tumbbad' ranks among top re-release grossers in India
Tumbbad now ranks alongside James Cameron's Titanic as one of the biggest re-release grossers in India. Titanic, with around ₹18 crore gross, is currently the third highest-grossing re-release. It is followed by Sholay 3D and Laila Majnu, which grossed approximately ₹13 crore and ₹11 crore respectively.
'Tumbbad's worldwide total and sequel announcement
Including its original run, Tumbbad has amassed a worldwide total of about ₹41.5 crore gross and is on track to finish around ₹50 crore gross. This marks a significant achievement for the film. The re-release, backed by Eros International and Aanand L. Rai, has reignited interest among both fans and critics. In exciting news for fans, Shah has announced that a sequel, Tumbbad 2, is in development.
