'Tumbbad' re-release is unstoppable, earns ₹24.45cr in 11 days
The re-release of the horror fantasy Tumbbad, featuring Sohum Shah, has been performing exceptionally well at the box office. Despite its struggle during its original release on October 12, 2018, the film gained traction after being featured on OTT platforms. This led to a theatrical re-release on September 13, 2024. The re-released version has collected ₹24.45 crore in 11 days. Surpassing its initial lifetime earnings of ₹13.57cr, it achieved record-breaking second weekend box office numbers compared to its first run.
'Tumbbad' re-release on track to break records
The total net collection for the second weekend of Tumbbad's re-release is approximately ₹7.6cr, surpassing the first weekend's earnings of ₹7.25cr. After 10 days, the re-release has grossed around ₹21.6cr net, which is already more than 50% of the original film's lifetime collection of ₹13.5cr net. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh reported that its solid performance makes it a strong contender for the highest-grossing Hindi re-release in India's history.
'Tumbbad' re-release outperforms Kareena Kapoor Khan's film
In addition to its box office success, the re-release of Tumbbad has also outperformed Kareena Kapoor Khan's The Buckingham Murders. The film earned ₹15.75cr in the first week of its re-release, surpassing The Buckingham Murders' earnings. This achievement is particularly significant considering that ticket prices were as low as ₹99 on National Cinema Day, the second Friday of the re-release.
'Tumbbad' re-release strategy and sequel announcement
The re-release of Tumbbad, supported by Eros International and Aanand L. Rai, has attracted both new viewers and long-time fans. The film's success has been further amplified by the addition of deleted scenes in this version. Adding to the excitement, Shah has confirmed that a sequel, Tumbbad 2, is in development.
