'Tumbbad' re-release is a hit; mints ₹21.95cr in 10 days
The 2018 horror film Tumbbad has been re-released in theaters and is performing exceptionally well at the box office. The film, which was initially available on OTT platforms, was pulled down ahead of its re-release. It has now grossed ₹21.95 crore in just 10 days since its re-release, surpassing its original 2018 earnings. This success comes amidst a sequel announcement.
'Tumbbad' re-release surpasses original box office collection
The re-release of Tumbbad has been a major success, with the film earning over ₹20 crore in less than 10 days. This is a significant increase from its original lifetime box office collection of ₹13.57 crore in 2018. The film's producer, Aanand L. Rai, attributes this success to the audience's regret for not watching it on the big screen during its initial release.
Rai attributes re-release success to audience's 'hidden guilt'
Speaking about the re-release, Rai told Zoom, "Tumbbad's re-release happened for a reason. When we were in 2018 and it got released, the film never had that larger audience in the theaters." He added, "We somewhere knew that if we re-release it, there was the hidden guilt in the audience for not watching it. They will come to theaters."
'Tumbbad' sequel confirmed for 2025
The success of Tumbbad's re-release has sparked plans for a sequel. Producer and lead actor Sohum Shah has confirmed that a sequel is in the works, with a 2025 production start date. This decision capitalizes on the film's renewed popularity and sets the stage for further expansions of the franchise. The sequel aims to continue the unique blend of horror, fantasy, and folklore that made Tumbbad a cult classic.
