'Top Gun: Maverick' trailer: Tom 'Maverick' Cruise returns this May
After nearly four decades, Tom Cruise will be returning in his Lieutenant Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell avatar in the highly-anticipated sequel to the smash hit 1986 movie Top Gun. Titled Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel will usher in more aviation tricks, badassery, and some unresolved undercurrents from the past. Before premiering in May this year, makers dropped another trailer for the film. Here's a breakdown.
Why does this story matter?
The sequel backed by Paramount Pictures has witnessed multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While other movies, including Daniel Craig's James Bond swansong, No Time To Die, squeezed in releases in between better patches, Cruise was waiting for conditions to completely get better. Now, it's set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, before its theatrical release on May 27.
What does the clip show us?
The extremely talented and cocky Navy pilot Mitchell gets called back to train a new batch of pilots at Top Gun. The trailer shows Mitchell, still a captain after all these years, wasn't really the first choice but was brought in at Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky's (Val Kilmer) request, who is an admiral now. One might remember Iceman from the original movie as Maverick's rival-turned-wingman.
Maverick's mental toil, Goose's son Rooster to drive narrative forward
While we get some cool aviation skills and nostalgic moments playing to the backdrop of the re-expressed original score, we get some insight into the narrative too. We see Mitchell grappling with depression that has held him back. This might have to do with his co-pilot Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw dying in Top Gun. More so, because Goose's son Rooster plays a major part here.

Here's the cast for the aviation flick
Played by Miles Teller, Rooster calls out Maverick in one scene and a funeral has been teased in nearly every teaser/trailer released. Apart from Cruise, Kilmer, and Teller, Top Gun: Maverick co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Manny Jacinto, Glen Powell, and Monica Barbaro, among others. After the demise of Top Gun helmer Tony Scott, the sequel is directed by Joseph Kosinski.
