How this American sting operation inspired M. Night Shyamalan's 'Trap'
Hollywood filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan's latest psychological thriller, Trap, reportedly draws inspiration from Operation Flagship, one of the most successful sting operations in US history. The recently-released film features Josh Hartnett as Cooper, a parental serial killer who unwittingly walks into a sting operation at his daughter's favorite popstar concert. He tries to escape and causes diversions, but, to no avail.
Operation Flagship: The real-life sting behind 'Trap'
Operation Flagship unfolded in December 1985. The US Marshals Service sent over 3,000 fake invitations to fugitives across Washington D.C., offering free tickets to a Washington Redskins vs. Cincinnati Bengals game. These invitations were cleverly disguised as coming from Flagship International Sports TV and targeted individuals with outstanding warrants.
The sting unfolds: Operation Flagship's ingenious execution
On December 15, 101 fugitives were lured to the Washington Convention Center under the pretense of a pregame party. Here, they were promised their free tickets as well as a chance to win more tickets and a Super Bowl XX trip. Over 150 undercover officers, who were disguised as cheerleaders, caterers, Flagship representatives and janitorial staff, awaited their arrival at the venue.
The arrests: Operation Flagship's dramatic conclusion
The fugitives were led in groups of 15 to a separate room, where enforcement chief Louie McKinney, acting as the party's master of ceremonies, gave a signal for the Special Operations Group to enter the room. Upon his cue, "Today really is your lucky day, and I have a big surprise for you!" 25 SOG members entered the room with weapons drawn. This process continued until all 101 fugitives were arrested, reportedly resulting in a total of 144 arrests!
How the Operation impacted the director
Speaking about the real inspiration, the director told Empire, "It was hilarious. The cops were literally cheerleaders and mascots. These guys were dancing as they came in. And they were all caught. It was so twisted and funny." The director has also described the film as, "What if The Silence Of The Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?" The movie also stars Ariel Donoghue and Alison Pill.
Will the film spawn a sequel?
There are several moments in Trap that mirror the real-life operation. For instance, after a seemingly okay beginning, Cooper is continuously deeply uncomfortable, even scared when he sees the deluge of police officers at the concert. His interactions with vendor Jamie (Jonathan Langdon), are also important since Jamie is well aware of the FBI's plans. Eventually, in one of the last scenes, Cooper frees himself, igniting hopes for a potential sequel. The film is currently screening in theatres.
