'The Office's new iteration will chronicle a Midwestern newspaper
The updated version of the popular, genre-defining sitcom The Office, has landed at Peacock, reported Variety. The upcoming show is neither a reboot nor a spinoff of the original series but instead will introduce an entirely new cast and setting. The plot follows the same documentary crew from Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch as they discover a struggling historic newspaper in the Midwest.
The synopsis of the show has been unveiled
The storyline of the new series says, "The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters." Specific character details are yet to be disclosed, but it was previously reported that actors Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore will headline the cast ensemble.
Production team includes 'The Office' veterans
The creative team behind the new series includes Greg Daniels, who adapted the American version of The Office for television, and Michael Koman. Both Daniels and Koman will serve as executive producers, alongside Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, creators of the original British version. Other executive producers include Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas. The production is set to commence in July.
NBCU Entertainment President expressed excitement for new series
Lisa Katz, president of scripted content for NBCU Entertainment, expressed her enthusiasm. She noted that The Office continues to attract new fans on Peacock more than a decade after its conclusion on NBC. Katz added, "In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper."
Refresher about the original series
The original American version of The Office, which aired from 2005 to 2013, chronicled the lives of employees at paper company Dunder Mifflin. It ran for nine seasons, and starred John Krasinski, Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, BJ Novak, Mindy Kaling, and Craig Robinson, among others. Despite concluding its original broadcast years ago, the series continues to be a fan favorite and is streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and JioCinema in India.
