Atwood has disclosed that there is one true Easter egg hidden within the costumes of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. This surprise lies in Catherine O'Hara's Delia Deetz costume. In a scene where Jeffrey Jones's character, Charles Deetz, is mourned after his unexpected death, O'Hara wears a top hat from the original film Beetlejuice, released 36 years ago.

The top hat worn by O'Hara was actually kept by her from the first movie. Atwood revealed, "She brought that in and we go, 'Let's use it for the funeral. It'll be perfect.'" In the original film, Delia wore this hat with a gray outfit during scenes leading to the climax where her daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) is set to marry Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton). The hat was embellished with red and black tulle.
