The CW renews multiple shows; 'The Flash' returning for S9!
American English-language television network The CW has handed out the 2022-23 renewals to at least seven of its scripted shows. And, this list includes The Flash, Riverdale, Kung Fu, All American, Superman & Lois, Walker, and Nancy Drew. This year's renewals are special because the network is currently in the middle of majority ownership changing. Here's more on that.
Why does this story matter?
It was reported in January that the parent companies of The CW, namely Warner Bros. and ViacomCBS, were looking toward selling the network's majority stake. This comes after WarnerMedia was acquired by AT&T, which is now merging WarnerMedia with Discovery. Separately, Viacom also got merged with CBS. Hence, with uncertainty about the The CW's majority owner, there was some tension about the renewals.
'The Flash' fans, rejoice!
Barry Allen will return in the ninth season of the DC speedster's tale, making The Flash the longest-running show in the Arrowverse. To recall, the previous record-holder, Arrow had come to a conclusion after eight seasons. This part was more or less not a surprise since lead star Grant Gustin had been in news for signing a new deal in January.
Here's what we know of 'Riverdale'
Apart from The Flash, renewal of the youth show, Riverdale was also expected. Quickly gaining a massive fan following after its debut, the show has lost some of its shine down the years, nevertheless, it still enjoys a steady viewership. However, we don't know whether the seventh season would be the last season for the Lili Reinhart, KJ Apa, Cole Sprouse, Camila Mendes-starrer.
Earlier, The CW had renewed a few non-scripted shows too
Coming to the other shows, All American will return for the fifth season, Nancy Drew with fourth season, and Superman & Lois and Walker with their third seasons. Notably, The CW had already renewed some of its non-scripted shows, such as Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Masters of Illusion, and World's Funniest Animals. The premiere date of these fresh renewals will be announced soon.
