Emmys 2024: 'The Bear' rewrites comedy history with record wins!
The Hulu comedy series, The Bear, has set a new record by winning 11 Emmy Awards, surpassing its own previous record of 10 wins in a single season. Its record-breaking win was anticipated as the show had received a staggering 23 Emmy nominations for its second season. This is the highest number of nominations ever received by a comedy series, breaking the previous record of 22 held by NBC's 30 Rock since 2009.
Series scores big with multiple nominations
Created by Christopher Storer, the series was the second-most nominated at this year's Emmys, earning recognition in categories like Best Comedy Series, and Writing for a Comedy Series. It also received guest actor nominations for Jon Bernthal, Bob Odenkirk, and Will Poulter—along with guest actress nods for Olivia Colman and Jamie Lee Curtis. At the ceremony, Ebon Moss-Bachrach—who plays "Cousin" Richie on the show—took home his second Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
History-making wins at Emmys!
Jeremy Allen White won the Emmy for Best Actor, while Liza Colón-Zayas made history with her first Emmy win for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series—becoming the first Latina to claim the title. In her acceptance speech, she revealed she hadn't prepared remarks, doubting her chances of winning given the competition from nominees like Meryl Streep, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Carol Burnett. Storer also took home the Emmy for Best Directing for the Fishes episode.
'The Bear's genre sparked debate among critics
The classification of The Bear as a comedy has been a topic of debate since its Season 2. Executive producer Josh Senior addressed this controversy at the January Emmys, stating, "I think the show is true to life, and sometimes it's funny and sometimes it's real." Moss-Bachrach also commented on this issue by suggesting that traditional ideas about comedy and drama are becoming outdated.
