What's next for 'The Accountant' franchise? Director teases third part
What's the story
The forthcoming sequel of The Accountant, The Accountant 2, isn't just a standalone film but the middle part of a meticulously crafted trilogy.
Gavin O'Connor, who directed both films, made this exciting revelation during his interview with Collider at SXSW.
He confirmed that the trilogy idea has been in the works since the post-production stage of the first movie.
The franchise stars Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal.
Trilogy vision
'The Accountant' trilogy planned since first film's post-production
O'Connor and screenwriter Bill Dubuque have been planning the trilogy since they first started working on the first film, The Accountant.
O'Connor said, "There's always been three. Since post-production, since I started editing the first one."
He further explained that his collaboration with Dubuque began with a script from Lynette Howell Taylor, which he responded to personally and creatively.
Creative partnership
O'Connor praised Dubuque's contribution to the trilogy
O'Connor also praised Dubuque for his major contribution to the trilogy. He said their vision for The Accountant grew organically from the work they did together.
The director said, "Bill was a great partner in allowing me to start taking it in directions."
He also revealed they decided on a three-film plan early on in their partnership, leading to this project, The Accountant 2, the middle installment.
Sequel progress
'The Accountant 3' is already in development
With The Accountant 2 scheduled to release on April 25, 2025, O'Connor and Dubuque are already turning their eyes toward completing the trilogy with The Accountant 3.
Although not much is known about the third installment, O'Connor confirmed that they are working on the story.
He added, "We've been now kicking the tires on what that story is. So, we'll be doing that next."
