Grammys 2016 winners announced
Taylor Swift's album '1989' won the 'Best Pop Album' award, while 'The Silver Lining' won the 'Best Traditional-Pop Album'. 'Best Rock Album' went to Muse's 'Drones', and the 'Best Dance/Electronic Album' to 'Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack U'. Chris Stapleton's 'Traveller' won the 'Best Country Album of the Year', and Alabama Shakes' 'Sound and Color' won the 'Best Alternative Music Album of the Year'.
Grammy Awards’ history
The First annual Grammy (Gramophone) Awards ceremony was conducted in 1959 at the Beverly Hilton, California. The Recording Academy of the US awards Grammys to honor excellence in the 'recording arts and sciences'. Grammys are awarded to artists and technical professionals by the academy based on a unique voting process which doesn't necessarily include chart positions and sales.

Quincy Jones with 79 nominations has the record for most Grammy nominations. Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' won 8 awards to set the record for most awards won in a single night. Beyoncé in 2010 became the first female-artist to take home six Grammys in a single night. Norah Jones, Late Pt. Ravi Shankar's daughter won an award in every category she was nominated in 2003.
Indian Grammy Award winners
Pt. Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain and AR Rahman are amongst the eight Indians who have managed to win a Grammy, so far. Pt. Ravi Shankar has also been awarded two Grammys posthumously including a 'Lifetime achievement Grammy award'.
Grammy award ceremony kicks off
The 58th Annual Grammys opened with Taylor Swift performing 'Out of the Woods' song from her album- 1989. Artists like Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Bieber, Sam Hunt, Carrie Underwood, Brittany Howard and many performed at the ceremony. Lady Gaga's performance paid tribute to David Bowie, while John Legend, Demi Lovato, Luke Bryan, Meghan Trainor and Tyrese Gibson performed a medley of Lionel Richie's hits.
Rihanna cancels performance for second time
Rihanna cancelled her performance at the 58th Annual Grammys as she was suffering from bronchitis. Rihanna was forced to cancel her Grammys performance in 2009 after she was assaulted by her then-boyfriend, Chris Brown.
People of Indian origin at the Grammys
Anoushka Shankar, daughter of Late Pt. Ravi Shankar who was nominated for the fifth time in the 'World Music' section lost to Angelique Kidjo's 'Sings' Jeff Bhasker of Indian origin won Grammys for 'Best Non-classical Producer', and 'Best Record' for 'Uptown Funk'. Rudresh Mahanthappa won the 'Best Instrumental Composition' for 'The Afro Latin Jazz Suite', beating another Indian David Balakrishnan in the same section.
Others who shined at the awards
Meghan Trainor won the 'Best New Artist', and Ed Sheeran and Amy Wadge's 'Thinking out loud' won the 'Best Song'. Mark Ronson's 'Uptown Funk' featuring Bruno Mars bagged the 'Pop Duo/Group-Performance', and 'Best Record' awards. Alabama Shakes' 'Don't Wanna Fight' won the 'Best Rock Performance' and the 'Best Rock Song'. 'Best R&B Performance' and 'Best Rap Song' went to 'Earned It' and 'Alright' respectively.
