Adele outnumbered other 2016-Brit-nominees with 4 Brits, including the most prestigious, 'Album of the Year' for her album '25'. 'Best British Group' award went to Coldplay while Tame Impala was awarded the 'Best International Group'. James Bay was awarded the 'British Male Solo Artist' and the 'International Male Solo Artist' award went to Justin Bieber. David Bowie was posthumously awarded the 'BRITS Icon' award.
What are BRITS?
The Brit Awards or Brits are pop music excellence awards given by the 'British Phonographic Industry' every year. The British Phonographic Industry also gives awards for classical music excellence called the 'Classic Brit Awards'. The first edition ceremony of Brit Awards was conducted in 1977 at Wembley Conference Centre, London. The first Brit awards ceremony marked the silver jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

Robbie Williams holds the record for 'Most Brits won', with 12 individual Brits and 5 Brits with 'Take That' pop-group. Adele and Annie Lennox share the 'Most Brits won by a female' record with 8 Brits each. Coldplay (in the British group) with 9 Brits and U2 (in the international group) with 7 Brits hold the record for 'Most Brits won by a group'.
Youngest and oldest Brit winners
The youngest individual artist ever to win a Brit award was Joss Stone, at the age of 17; whereas Tom Jones was the oldest solo artist ever to win a Brit award when he was 62 years old.
The 2016 Annual Brit Music Awards
The nominations for the 2016 Annual Brit pop music awards were revealed on 14 January 2016. The 36th edition of the 'British Phonographic Industry' music awards would be held at the O2 Arena, London on 24 February 2016. Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, popularly known as the 'Ant & Dec' duo would be the award ceremony presenters for the third time.
Designer Brit trophies this year
In November 2015, it was announced that Pam Hogg, the fashion designer would design and style the Brit award trophies in a unique manner for each category. All of the trophies would be part of an exclusive collection.
2016 Brit award ceremony opens
Coldplay kicked off the 36th Brit awards ceremony with a colorful opening-performance of their hit 'Hymn for the Weekend'. The award ceremony paid a tearful tribute to the late British-Musician David Bowie introduced by Annie Lennox, which included a speech by Gary Oldman, and a performance by Lorde with Bowie's group. Adele, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd and many more performed at the event.
