'Thangalaan' box office Day 2: Vikram's film witnesses sharp drop
What's the story
Chiyaan Vikram's latest release, Thangalaan, experienced a dip in its box office collection on its second day.
The period drama raked in approximately ₹4.75 crore on Friday, bringing the two-day total to ₹18.05 crore nett, according to trade website Sacnilk.
Despite the decline, which was anticipated due to it being a working day, the film is expected to rebound over the weekend.
Film details
'Thangalaan' not a typical masala entertainer
Thangalaan is not a typical commercial film, but a period drama featuring Vikram in an unprecedented role.
The film was never designed to make an immediate impact, but rather to deliver compelling content that would draw audiences to theaters.
Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film is projected to earn around ₹35-40 crore nett by the end of its extended first weekend.
Comparison
'Thangalaan' lags behind Vikram's previous hit 'Ponniyin Selvan-II'
The film's performance is slightly lower than Vikram's previous blockbuster, Ponniyin Selvan-II, which debuted with a nett collection of ₹25 crore in the Tamil market alone.
In Tamil Nadu, Thangalaan reportedly recorded an overall occupancy rate of 32.57% on Friday, while the Telugu version had a marginally higher occupancy at 36.46%.
These figures indicate that the film has successfully piqued the interest of viewers, particularly in southern states.
Plot
'Thangalaan' explores clash between earthly and supernatural
Thangalaan narrates the tale of a tribal group, led by their chief Thangalaan, who are employed by a British officer to look for gold in what is now known as the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF).
Their quest for gold brings them into conflict with a mystical force led by a local sorceress, Aarathi.
Thangalaan also stars Malvika Mohanan, Pasupathy, Daniel Caltagirone, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and Sapath Ram among others.
The movie is likely to spawn a sequel.
