Sylvester Stallone set to auction off $6M worth of watches
Sylvester Stallone, the renowned actor celebrated for his role in the Rocky series, is gearing up to auction off 11 high-end watches from his personal collection. The auction is slated for June 5 at Sotheby's New York and will feature a variety of timepieces, including a rare Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime. This will mark the first time a Grandmaster Chime will be available at a commercial auction.
Stallone's Grandmaster Chime could set an auction record
The Grandmaster Chime in Stallone's collection initially purchased for $2.5M, carries an estimated price tag of $2.5M to $5M. There is speculation that it may exceed this range and potentially set a new record for a non-charity auction. Stallone acquired the pristine Grandmaster Chime after personally reaching out to the Patek board, viewing it as an art piece akin to a Claude Monet painting, adding that he had "a real sense of accomplishment owning it."
Stallone's philosophy behind parting with Grandmaster Chime
Stallone's decision to auction his Grandmaster Chime is rooted in his philosophy of sharing things he enjoys rather than hoarding them. He shared it in a YouTube video linked to Sotheby's auction. Regarding the reason for selling his prized possession, Stallone reflected, "I was going to covet and keep it forever, that's just not my personality. I tend to enjoy things and then I like to share them."
Grandmaster Chime, pristine in original packaging
Stallone's Grandmaster Chime, meticulously preserved in its original packaging, arrives with accompanying papers and a lavish presentation box adorned with the actor's name. Crafted from white gold, this timepiece stands as a testament to Patek Philippe's horological expertise, boasting an array of 20 complications spread across two sides. Notable features include a perpetual calendar and five distinct chiming modes, showcasing the pinnacle of watchmaking mastery.
Other notable timepieces in Stallone's auction collection
The auction will also feature two other Patek Philippe watches from Stallone's collection—a 2021 stainless steel Nautilus reference 5711/1300A-001 and another Nautilus reference 5711 in stainless steel. These are expected to fetch between $200K and $400K, and $50K to $100K respectively. Additionally, four Panerai watches from Stallone's collection will be up for auction, including a limited edition Panerai Reference PAM00382 Luminor Submersible 1950 featured in The Expendables 2.
Gold timepieces round out Stallone's collection
Four gold timepieces will also be available at the auction, including Stallone's 2016 pink gold Rolex Day-Date with a dark green dial and his 2022 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon 50th Anniversary. These are estimated to fetch between $25K and $50K, and between $100K and $200K, respectively. A gold Piaget Polo Grande and a Cartier Pasha Seatimer, gifted to Stallone by the president of Cartier at the Deauville Film Festival, complete the collection.
