Sushmita on adopting Renee: Wisest decision I made at 24
Sushmita Sen took the world by surprise when in 2000, at just 24 years of age, she adopted a girl (Renee). In 2010, she adopted her second daughter, Alisah. And now almost two decades later, the former Miss Universe expressed that she has no qualms about her decisions. Instead she says, "The wisest decision I made at the age of 24 was to become a mother."
Adopting daughters was self-preservation, for protecting myself: Sushmita
"It stabilized my life. People think it (adopting the girls) was a great act of charity and wonderful action but it was self-preservation. It was me protecting myself," she said in her recent media interaction. Talking more about this, the 43-year-old highlighted that she may not have given birth to her two kids, but "I have had the privilege of experiencing it twice."

"In the natural birth, the mother and the child connect through the umbilical cord but in adoption, the mother and the child are connected by this higher power, a connection that you cannot cut off." "To become a mother who has given birth from the heart. I have not missed a day of feeling the joy of motherhood," she said.
Decision was tough, but proud didn't ignore my calling: Sushmita
The vivacious actress admitted that it was a tough decision "at the age of 24 when I was at the top of my game in my career," but she's proud that she didn't "ignore the calling." "Doing something that encompasses your heart, your calling always makes sure that you stay true to your DNA and who you're. Being an actress is challenging," she highlighted.

"It's a very self-centered job. You've to be all about yourself. Your vanity has to be at its highest for you to be successful. But I am proud of the 24-year-old because I could have delayed it, ignore the calling but I didn't," Sushmita added.
"They are choosing me back, which is a great feeling"
Sushmita ended her interaction by saying that credit also goes to Renee and Alisha for "choosing me back." "The truth is I chose them, they didn't choose me. They didn't have a say in it. Now, when my Renee is almost 20 and Alisah is 10, I get a feeling that they are choosing me back, which is a great feeling," she said.
