Sunny Deol to play family man in next OTT film
What's the story
In a major departure from his usual action-loaded roles, actor Sunny Deol will play the role of a family man in the upcoming movie Safar.
Directed by Shashank Udapurkar, the movie will apparently be released directly on an OTT platform rather than in theaters.
This is a break from the norm for a Deol starrer, especially after his recent blockbuster, Gadar 2: The Katha Continues (2023).
Character exploration
'Safar' explores new territory for Deol
Safar also marks a new chapter in Deol's career as he dons the hat of a middle-aged family man.
The character will go on a self-discovery journey, learn to live the life to fullest, and find happiness in helping others.
A source told Mid-Day, "There is no action in the film; it revolves around Sunny's middle-aged family man, who realizes that one can find happiness only by helping people and learns the true meaning of life."
Actor's response
Deol's commitment to 'Safar' despite departure from typical roles
Despite his fanbase expecting him to take on larger-than-life roles where he single-handedly takes on villains, Deol didn't think twice before agreeing to Safar.
The source further said, "When (producer Vishal Rana) and Shashank approached him with the story, he loved it and said yes immediately, despite knowing that it's nothing like what his fan base expects from him."
The film also stars Simran Bagga and Darshan Jariwala.
Release details
'Safar' to be released on OTT platform by year-end
The decision to release Safar on an OTT platform was taken because of its intimate and heartfelt story about a family. The team is now finalizing an OTT platform and hopes to release the film by the end of the year.
Udapurkar, known for his previous works Anna (2016) and Prawaas (2020), wanted to explore a different aspect of Deol's on-screen persona with this film.
