Sundance Film Festival to relocate to Colorado in 2027
What's the story
The famous Sundance Film Festival, one of the world's biggest film festivals, will move its base from Park City, Utah, to Boulder, Colorado, in 2027.
This decision ends a remarkable era for the festival, which has been hosted in Park City since 1985.
This development comes after securing a 10-year agreement with Boulder city officials, with Boulder edging out Cincinnati and Salt Lake City for the honor.
Selection process
Why was Boulder chosen?
Boulder was selected for its credentials as a college town, tech hub, and its stunning natural beauty.
Amanda Kelso, the acting CEO of Sundance Institute, pointed out the breathtaking Flatiron Mountain Range surrounding Boulder.
"One of the things that we also thought about is one of Robert Redford's founding principles, which is this notion of making sure that the festival has a sense of space and a sense of place," she said.
Future uncertainties
Sundance's departure: A new chapter and challenges ahead
While moving Sundance to Boulder starts a new chapter for the festival, it also comes with challenges.
For decades, Park City has been synonymous with Sundance, premiering acclaimed Hollywood films such as Reservoir Dogs and Little Miss Sunshine.
However, in recent years, the festival has struggled due to the global pandemic, relatively less successful titles, a long box office slump, and strained relations with the local community in Park City.

Sundance's final year in Park City: A look ahead
Sundance's last edition in Park City will be held from January 22 to February 1, 2026.
Eugene Hernandez, Sundance Film Festival Director, said, "I frankly can't wait to be there on day one on january 22 2026, to start unveiling the next program and in all sincerity, invite that loyal, committed audience of Sundance Film Festival fans to continue that relationship with us in 2027 and beyond."
