'Stree 2' becomes 2024's biggest Hindi opener, earns over ₹54cr
Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao's latest release, Stree 2, has made a smashing debut at the box office, surpassing all expectations. The horror-comedy raked in ₹54.35 crore on its opening day, including earnings from preview shows held on Wednesday evening. This makes Stree 2 the biggest Hindi opener of 2024 so far, outperforming several big movies with A-list actors.
'Stree 2' surpasses 'Fighter's opening day earnings
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Stree 2 earned approximately ₹46 crore on Thursday and an additional ₹8.35 crore from Wednesday evening's preview shows. Prior to Stree 2, the biggest Hindi opener of the year was Fighter, which had earned ₹24.6 crore on its first day in January. However, Kalki 2898 AD, a multilingual release, remains the biggest Indian opener of the year with ₹95 crore on its opening day.
'Stree 2' enjoys high occupancy in theaters
Stree 2 enjoyed an overall occupancy of 77.09% on Thursday. In the Delhi-NCR region, the film had 1,200 shows with an impressive 86.75% occupancy. In Mumbai, where the film had 1,103 shows, it saw an occupancy of 81%. The film is expected to benefit from the extended five-day weekend due to Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan holidays.
'Stree 2' outperforms 'Vedaa' and 'Khel Khel Mein'
Stree 2 was released alongside John Abraham's Vedaa and the Akshay Kumar-starrer Khel Khel Mein. Despite being a multilingual release, Vedaa managed to earn only ₹6.52 crore across India. Meanwhile, Khel Khel Mein fared even worse, earning just ₹5 crore. However, these films are also expected to earn better over the course of the weekend.
'Stree 2' continues the horror-comedy universe of Dinesh Vijan
Stree 2 is a part of producer Dinesh Vijan's horror-comedy universe, which began with Stree in 2018 and includes Bhediya and Munjya. The film, directed by Amar Kaushik, also features Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi, and Abhishek Banerjee. It continues the story of Chanderi, now terrorized by the menacing Sarkata, with the townsfolk once again seeking Stree's help.
