'Silk: Spider Society' scrapped after years in development
Sony's much-anticipated live-action Spider-Man television show, Silk: Spider Society, has been canceled after several years in development. Initially announced in 2022 as the "first live-action Spider-Man TV show" for Amazon Prime Video and MGM+, recent reports from Deadline reveal that the project will not proceed. This news follows shortly after Prime Video's announcement that Noir, starring Nicolas Cage, had been officially picked up to series during the Amazon Upfronts.
Creative differences led to 'Silk: Spider Society's demise
The cancellation is reportedly due to creative differences. The writers' room for the Marvel drama did not reopen immediately after the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Showrunner Angela Kang and her team were instructed by higher-ups to "reconfigure the show" so it would not rely so heavily on the central character, Cindy Moon, also known as Silk. In February, it was reported that Sony had let go of the entire writers' room, barring Kang and a few other executives.
'Noir' likely chosen over 'Silk: Spider Society'
Despite a positive update on Silk: Spider Society last year, the project's future was "script-dependant," having gone through three different iterations. Kang's most recent pitch for the show was well-received, as per Deadline. However, after deliberations on where to allocate resources for genre IP projects, it seems that executives decided to go with Cage's Noir TV show over Silk.
Sony seeks new platform for 'Silk: Spider Society'
Silk: Spider Society was initially developed as a movie at Sony Pictures before being reshaped as a television series. Despite its cancellation on MGM+ and Prime Video, Sony Pictures Television Studios is reportedly looking to shop Silk: Spider Society around to other platforms. Currently, however, Silk: Spider Society joins many other superhero shows that have been scrapped before they got to see the light.
