Soon-Yi, Woody Allen's wife and Mia Farrow's daughter, breaks silence
Soon-Yi Previn is the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow and Andre Previn. She is also married to Mia's boyfriend and director Woody Allen whose name came up in the #MeToo movement. Recently, she broke her silence on the scandal surrounding Woody and Mia. She spoke of her relationship with both Mia as a parent, and Woody as a husband. Here's what she said.
Mama's going to make all your nightmares come true
Soon-Yi grew up impoverished in South Korea. Her struggles continued even after her adoption by actress Mia Farrow. Though her life was expected to significantly improve in New York, Mia was allegedly abusive, physically and emotionally. Mia reportedly berated Soon-Yi, calling her 'moronic', 'stupid' and threatening to send her to an insane asylum. Soon-Yi described Mia's parenting as a 'total breakdown of your spirit'.
Woody and Soon-Yi, another Oedipus Wrecks?
While Woody and Mia's relationship didn't particularly work out, Soon-Yi and Woody's relationship developed when she was in college. Woody showed her Ingmar Bergman's 'The Seventh Seal' and kissed her as they were discussing the film. Attention starved, Woody's validation to her felt nice. She insisted their relationship worked because Woody pursued and valued her.
Was Mia jumping on the #MeToo bandwagon?
Understandably, Soon-Yi doesn't share a cordial relationship with Mia. She didn't mince words and bluntly said that Mia had not only taken undue advantage of the #MeToo movement but also paraded Dylan Farrow, her daughter, who accused Woody of touching her inappropriately. Woody, on his part, has always denied molestation allegations leveled on him by Dylan. Even the judge on the case said it was a purely competitive narrative.
The children weigh in on the matter
Notably, Dylan has accused Soon-Yi of re-victimizing her and trying to deflect Mia's allegations by bringing up her parenting. All siblings stood by Mia, saying they grew up in a compassionate home. Ronan Farrow, the famous #MeToo journalist also spoke in support of Mia. But, Woody's allies claim that Mia incited Dylan to accuse him when she discovered his relationship with adopted daughter, Soon-Yi.
A final word on the debacle
This editor's opinion is that the 1992 incident Woody was accused of, is mired in controversy and knowing the truth is impossible. While Dylan should get the benefit of the doubt, as the assault survivor, it is possible according to Soon-Yi's account, that Mia orchestrated these allegations. This would remain as one of the mysteries of the dark, ugly world of Hollywood.
