#SeriesInFocus: Unconventional-romance in 'Something In The Rain' is heartwarming
Korean dramas are a gift, which keeps on giving. The stories aren't dragged, characters well built and it's quite possible that no one can trump South Koreans in telling love stories. 'Something In The Rain', which released in March this year, ticks all the above boxes. The love story of Yoon Jin-ah and Seo Joon-hee is all kinds of mushy and amazing.
Jin-ah falls for her friend's brother Joon-hee
The show revolves around the love story of Joon-hee and Jin-ah, only it isn't your conventional boy-meets-girl, both fall for each other, tale. Joon-hee is Jin-ah's friend's younger brother, and also the best friend of her own brother. Basically, the four of them are pretty tight, so when Jin-ah and Joon-hee fall in love, things get weird pretty soon.
Family, societal norms and judgmental eyes, the couple fights all
The couple battles many things- Jin-ah's crazy obsessive ex, her mother who is fine with making Joon-hee's favorite food but doesn't approve of the relationship, colleagues who are nosy and Jin-ah's friend Seo Kyung-seon who can't decide between friendship and sisterhood. Amid all this, the couple steals moments, stands by each other and respects one another unconditionally. Too much feels!
A love that teaches you to stand up for yourself
Notably, this series also addresses another important issue- workplace sexual harassment, in a way that doesn't make you uncomfortable but puts the point across. Jin-ah has spent nearly a decade in one company and has (sadly) become used to harassment by her superiors, failing to ever stand up for herself. But Joon-hee's love gives her the confidence to lead the way against harassment.
Both lovers feel they are right, but they aren't
What makes 'Something In The Rain' fantastic is the conflicts it shows. The love story isn't without flaws. Jin-ah's thoughts, that she being the older one knows what's best, clashes with Joon-hee, who feels he has seen enough in the world to make wise decisions. On more than one occasion, both fail to choose the right path. But who knows what's right, anyway?
They can teach you a thing or two about love
But despite the flawed love story, which is pulled down by their family members, Jin-ah and Joon-hee succeed in giving important love lessons like how important self-respect is, and how necessary it is to know your worth. Above all, the story of Jin-ah and Joon-hee is about acceptance. No amount of glares or slaps (they were beaten too) was enough to keep them apart.
'Something In The Rain' will warm your heart
While the lead cast Son Ye-jin and Jung Hae-in take all the spotlight, it's important to appreciate Ahn Pan-seok's direction and Kim Eun's screenplay. The tale flows freely, the editing is crisp, music touching and the story brought alive on screen by amazing actors. This 16-episode series (available on Netflix) will leave you loving.
