Franchise history
'Smurfs' movie: A continuation of a beloved franchise
The next Smurfs movie continues the beloved franchise based on the comic series by Belgian artist Peyo. It comes over a decade after the first film, The Smurfs (2011), which had Katy Perry voicing Smurfette.
The franchise has two other films: The Smurfs 2 (2013) and Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017).
Apart from voicing Smurfette, Rihanna is also a producer and songwriter for the Paramount Animation production. She has penned original songs for the film.
Director's insight
'Smurfs' movie: A fresh take on a classic franchise
One of the directors, Miller, spoke about the new musical avatar of the hit animated franchise at last year's Annecy Animation Festival.
He called Peyo's comic books their "blueprint" for the new movie.
Miller teased delving into unanswered questions about the Smurfs village, saying: "You can reinvent it a bit or add to the lore. How did they get there? Why are they there?"
