Five films that emerged surprise hits just like 'SKTKS'
One cannot predict the fate of a film at the box office. Just last year we saw movies of Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan failing miserably at the ticket windows. And now, we have a 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety' exceeding expectations. The movie has zoomed past the Rs. 100 crore mark worldwide. Here are 5 such movies which emerged as surprise hits.
Kangana's 'Queen' was a game changer
In 2014, came a film that brought Kangana Ranaut to the fore. Although she had proved her mettle as an actress with films like 'Gangster', 'Fashion', 'Tanu Weds Manu', she never got as much recognition as other top Bollywood heroines, until 'Queen.' Made on a budget of Rs. 12.5 crore, the Vikas Bahl directorial raked in over Rs. 60 crore at the box office.
'Aashiqui 2' hit the right chords
The success story of 'Aashiqui 2' was one of its kind. As the film starred two fairly new actors, trade experts did not have much expectations from the Mohit Suri directorial. However, the true superstars of 'Aashiqui 2' were its songs. The audience was mesmerized by Arijit Singh's voice and that powered the film to do an unprecedented business of Rs. 80 crore plus.
Bollywood evolved with 'Vicky Donor'
Apart from Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam, 'Vicky Donor' also gave Hindi film industry the courage to take up new and challenging subjects. The Shoojit Sircar directorial, that dealt with sperm donation and infertility, managed to break the stereotype and was loved by the critics and the audience alike. The film was John Abraham's maiden production venture.
Vidya's 'Kahaani' kept everyone guessing till the end
Sujoy Ghosh kept the audience at the edge of their seats with 'Kahaani'. The gripping tale of a wife in search of her husband garnered unanimous praise. The small-budgeted film went on to do a massive business of over Rs. 60 crore and earned Vidya Balan the tag of 'Lady Khan'.
'Pyaar Ka Punchnama' was a breath of fresh air
The team of 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety' started off their journey with 'Pyaar Ki Punchnama' back in 2011. Starring six unknown faces, the film had quite a task up its sleeve. But thanks to its refreshing yet relatable content, the Luv Ranjan directorial emerged a sleeper hit at box office. The team has not looked back since then.
