Sivakarthikeyan v/s Vijay Antony: 'Parasakthi' title row heats up
What's the story
A social media storm has erupted over the title of Sivakarthikeyan's upcoming film, Parasakthi.
The controversy started when both Sivakarthikeyan and Vijay Antony unveiled their respective films on Wednesday.
Antony objected to the title of Sivakarthikeyan's film, saying it was too similar to his own Telugu project, Paraashakhti.
He issued a public statement through his production house, Vijay Antony Pictures.
Title registration
Antony's production house claimed title rights
In the statement, Antony's production house confirmed its official registration under the Producers category with membership number 21554. It also clarified that the Telugu title Paraashakhti has been registered in their favor.
The Tamil title of Antony's upcoming movie is Shakti Tirumagan.
The registration document also showed that the date of registration was July 22, 2024.
Title defense
Dawn Pictures defended their title rights on social media
In light of Antony's claim, Dawn Pictures—the production house of Sivakarthikeyan's film—came to their title rights' defense.
They took to social media to share letters issued by the Tamil and Telugu Producers Council.
The documents confirmed that they own the title Parasakthi in Tamil and Telugu languages.
The letters also mentioned that this title had been officially approved by the council, adding to the ongoing dispute.
These letters are dated January 11, 2025.
Public reaction
Social media users reacted to the title dispute
The title tussle between Sivakarthikeyan and Antony has triggered a storm of reactions on social media.
One user wrote, "Leave the parashakthi with one and only sivaji ganesan. It will be a tribute to him."
Another highlighted the difference in registration dates and wrote, "Telugu title registered by Antony sir letter shows July 2024 date. Ur letter shows January 2025 date."
Past controversies
'Parasakthi' title has a history of controversy
Notably, this isn't the first time Parasakthi's title has been mired in controversy.
The Sivaji Social Welfare Association had earlier objected to its usage, given its historical and cultural importance in Tamil cinema.
They called the 1952 classic film Parasakthi, featuring Sivaji Ganesan, a landmark moment for the industry.
The association feared reusing this title could undermine its legacy.
