Ramanan was a classically trained singer who performed in over 6,000 concerts during her impressive 35-year career. She regularly collaborated with her husband AV and is best known for her partnership with renowned composer Ilaiyaraaja, which catapulted her to nationwide stardom. Her breakthrough came with Poongathave Thaal Thiravai from the Tamil film Nizhalgal, which earned her widespread recognition. In addition to Ilaiyaraaja, Ramanan also contributed to compositions by Vidyasagar, Mani Sharma, and Deva. Among her most cherished songs are Bhoopalam Isaikkum from Thooral Ninnu Pochchu, Aanandha Raagam from Panner Pushpangal, and Kanmani Nee Vara from Thendrale Ennai Thodu. She made her singing debut in 1977 with a song from Sri Krishna Leela, performed alongside her husband. Her final song was Kannum Kannumthan Kalandaachu for Thalapathy Vijay's film Thirupaachi, composed by Mani Sharma. It was released in 2005.
