'Special' to 'Sex Education': Shows that have characters with disabilities
What's the story
We are in an era which is marked by increased awareness and advocacy for inclusivity and the OTT platforms have evolved to reflect the diverse realities of our world.
They have come up with several series that prioritize authentic representation, accessibility, and narratives that resonate with individuals with disabilities and their allies. We have curated some such shows below.
#1
'Atypical' (2017-2021)
The dramedy series Atypical centers on Sam Gardner, a teenager with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The show offers a poignant and often humorous exploration of Sam's journey to independence, relationships, and self-discovery.
It sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with ASD and their families while highlighting the importance of empathy and understanding in navigating the complexities of life with a disability.
#2
'Sex Education' (2019-2023)
The Netflix teen drama series Sex Education deals with several issues related to mental health, teenage sex, and sexual identity but its addressing of issues faced by people with disabilities stands out.
The character Isaac (George Robinson) uses a wheelchair due to a spinal injury.
The show portrays his life, experiences, relationships, and difficulties with depth and sensitivity especially in the final season.
#3
'Special' (2019-2021)
Challenging stereotypes and celebrating uniqueness, the groundbreaking semi-autobiographical comedy-drama series Special follows the life of Ryan, a young gay man with cerebral palsy, as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery and independence.
Created by and starring Ryan O'Connell, who has cerebral palsy in real life, the show offers a refreshingly honest and humorous portrayal of disability, relationships, and personal growth.
#4
'Raising Dion' (2019-2022)
The supernatural drama series Raising Dion follows the life of Nicole, a widowed mother, and her determination to protect her young son, Dion, who possesses supernatural abilities.
But, his classmate Esperanza with osteogenesis imperfecta (a rare genetic disorder, commonly known as brittle bone disease) who uses a wheelchair and shares a close bond with Dion steals the show.
#5
'The Healing Powers of Dude' (2020)
The family-friendly series The Healing Power of Dude follows Noah, an 11-year-old boy with social anxiety disorder.
Besides his emotional support dog, Dude, Noah receives immense support from his best friend Amara who uses a wheelchair and suffers from muscular dystrophy.
Instead of a pity lens, she is through a lighthearted glass to focus on the discussion about disabilities- both visible and invisible.
