'Shogun' dominated main acting categories at Emmys
The FX drama dominated the main acting categories at the Emmys, winning Best Drama, Lead Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Lead Actress (Anna Sawai). Sanada also shared in the Drama Series Emmy in his role as producer. Sawai made history as the first Asian descent star to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Lead Actress. The Outstanding Drama Series trophy was accepted by series co-creator/executive producer/showrunner Marks and star/producer Sanada.
'Shogun' is a retelling of 1980s Emmy-winning miniseries
Shogun is based on James Clavell's novel and is a retelling of the Emmy-winning 1980s NBC miniseries. The show is set in 1600 feudal Japan and features Sawai as Lady Mariko, who translates for Lord Toranaga (Sanada), and John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), an English ship captain entering Japanese society as it prepares for war. Frederick E. O. Toye won the Emmy for Directing for a Drama Series for his work on the penultimate episode, Crimson Sky.
