Shania Twain helped Jon Bon Jovi through his vocal surgery
Rock legend Jon Bon Jovi recently acknowledged fellow musician Shania Twain's significant role in his recovery from vocal cord surgery. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the 62-year-old singer referred to Twain as his "spirit sister." He revealed that they shared the same doctor and underwent identical surgeries. Bon Jovi first noticed issues with his vocal cords around 2015, which he discusses in his latest Hulu docuseries, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story.
Bon Jovi sought medical intervention after a conversation with wife
It wasn't until 2022 that Bon Jovi sought medical intervention for his vocal cord issues after a poignant conversation with his wife Dorothea while on tour. He only had two options: seek medical help or retire. Twain, who had previously undergone a vocal fold medialization procedure, became Bon Jovi's primary source of advice. He stated, "She's the only other one I've known that's ever had this surgery, with this doctor."
Twain encouraged Bon Jovi to go through with the surgery
Bon Jovi discovered they had the same doctor, Robert Sataloff, through media reports. He reflected, "Not only did she reassure me that it would be OK, but I think she also pulled my leg a little bit because she told me I'd be out there a lot sooner than I have been." "She says, 'Well, I told you that because I knew that you might back out otherwise.' And so, I couldn't wait to get the operation."
Now, Bon Jovi is dedicated to his recovery process
The surgery took place in June 2022. Nearly two years post-surgery, Bon Jovi is dedicated to his recovery process with daily voice exercises and coaching. He stated: "Every day is the recovery process." His band is set to release its 16th album, Forever, on June 7, featuring his vocals post-surgery. While he can sing, he admits, "I'm not necessarily capable of two and a half hours a night, four nights a week, but I'm aspiring to get that back."
