Is 'The Great Indian Kapil Show' inspired by Pakistani series?
What's the story
Pakistani comedian Shakeel Siddiqui, known for his television performances, has now opined that Indian comedian Kapil Sharma may have taken inspiration from his old Pakistani show, Banno Tere Abba Ki Oonchi Haveli.
Speaking to YouTuber Nadir Ali, Siddiqui said, "I am not saying that he stole my idea, but his concept is very close to mine."
However, he appreciated Sharma's talent and said he respected him.
Shared history
Siddiqui and Sharma share common television history
Both Siddiqui and Sharma have appeared on shows like Ustaadon Ka Ustaad and Comedy Circus, which highlights their shared history in the comedy scene.
Despite the allegations, Sharma continues to be celebrated for his unique approach to comedy.
He started his own show in 2011 with the name Comedy Nights with Kapil after winning six seasons of Comedy Circus and being a part of many comedy-oriented reality shows.
Past allegations
Sharma faced similar accusation in the past, too
Earlier, Pakistani comedian Tabish Hashmi had also accused Sharma of stealing ideas from comedy legends Umar Sharif and Amanullah.
In a Geo. TV interview, Hashmi said, "On Kapil's show, the set represents Delhi. Our set represents Lahore, and the two cities are identical."
"I have been to both cities. Delhi resembles Lahore, and vice versa. This is Umar Sharif's notion. This is Amanullah's concept. This is our concept."
Career progression
'Comedy Circus' to 'The Great Indian Kapil Show'
After Sharma started his own show, Comedy Nights With Kapil, it was rebranded as The Kapil Sharma Show following a five-year-stint.
Thereafter, the comedian and actor moved bases to OTT.
Today, his show The Great Indian Kapil Show is streaming on Netflix, with two seasons to boast of.
