Amid US immigration crackdown, SRK's 'Dunki' may re-release: Report
What's the story
In light of recent events surrounding illegal immigration in the US, talks are reportedly underway for a possible re-release of the 2023 film Dunki.
The movie, produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Taapsee Pannu, explores the theme of illegal migration.
A source told Mid-Day that the ongoing deportation of Indian immigrants from the US has brought Dunki into the limelight once again.
Film's relevance
'Dunki' highlighted struggles of illegal immigrants
In Dunki, Khan played Hardy, a character who helps his Punjab friends illegally migrate to the UK through the "donkey route."
A source told the portal, "The situation with Indian immigrants being deported in terrible conditions has reignited conversations around the themes of Dunki."
"Like every Rajkumar Hirani film, it was always meant to be more than just a big-ticket release; it highlighted a real struggle. Given what's happening now, the film's story feels urgent."
Director's response
Hirani would be 'happy' if 'Dunki' re-releases
When contacted by Mid-Day, Hirani said he was unaware of any such plans for a re-release. However, he was happy at the prospect of it happening.
"I'm not aware of any such plans, but I'd be happy if it re-releases. Illegal immigration has been happening for years from Punjab. It's just that the rest of the country is becoming aware now," said Hirani.
If the plans fall into place, the film may be re-released this month.
