Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment acquires rights to 'Devdas'
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's production company, Red Chillies Entertainment, has acquired the rights to the 2002 film Devdas. The announcement was made at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where Khan was conferred with the Pardo alla Carriera Ascona-Locarno Tourism award. During a masterclass at the festival, Khan discussed his deep connection with Devdas, describing it as a life-defining experience.
'Devdas' a landmark film in Indian cinema
Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a tragic love story based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1917 novel of the same name. The film, which starred Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff, was initially met with skepticism due to its outdated concept. However, it went on to become a landmark film in Indian cinema and received international recognition.
Khan shared personal connection with 'Devdas'
Khan revealed that Devdas was a tribute to his mother, who was fond of the classic tale. Despite being advised against participating in the project, Khan chose to act in it to fulfill an unfinished dream and for his mother's love. He also praised Bhansali's vision and the performances of his co-stars, crediting them for the film's success.
'Devdas' now part of Red Chillies Entertainment
Speaking about the acquisition of Devdas, Khan said, "It turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. So much so that we as a production company bought the rights of this film back, and I'm very, very proud that it belongs to our company now."
'Devdas' a testament to Indian cinema's technical achievements
Khan highlighted the technical achievements of Devdas, including the intricate Indian garb and opulent production design. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and earned a BAFTA nomination. Khan referred to it as a "modern-day masterpiece" and expressed gratitude for the continued interest in the film more than two decades after its release.
