Selena Gomez says women face more online scrutiny than men
What's the story
In a recent interview on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, Selena Gomez voiced her opinion on the increased scrutiny women face on social media compared to men.
Joined by her collaborator-partner, Benny Blanco, the two spoke about their collaborative album I Said I Love You First and their relationship.
While Blanco confessed to staying away from social media comments, Gomez revealed her battle with online hate, especially about her appearance.
Online scrutiny
Gomez's perspective on social media's impact
Gomez noted that women have to deal with "a lot more intense feelings" about how they look because of online comments.
She called it "pretty wild," adding, "When I get prepared for an event, 90% of the time I just hope I can take the picture and sit down. It's the character that gets judged, it's the way I'm not white enough, I'm not Mexican enough."
Online impact
'Nobody cares about those kinds of things with men'
Gomez confessed that she sometimes ends up believing what people say about her online.
"Nobody cares about those kinds of things with men," she said, adding that women are judged for everything, from the way they look to whom they date.
"We just carry a lot," she added. "My weight's a big one, too. Everyone just has something to say, and it's really making me sad."
Social media break
Gomez's relationship with social media
Gomez revealed that she has been taking breaks from social media due to its effect on her mental health.
She confessed to sometimes reading negative comments but mostly ignoring them.
She doesn't have social media on her phone now, but acknowledges its positive aspects too.
"I understand the power of what social media is - it's just tricky," she said.
