Why Sanya Malhotra said yes to upcoming feminist drama 'Mrs.'
What's the story
Sanya Malhotra is all set to star in the upcoming ZEE5 movie Mrs.
The film is an official adaptation of the critically acclaimed Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen (2021).
In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Malhotra explained her reason behind doing the film, saying she was excited about the original movie and how relatable it is for many Indian women.
Film's theme
'Mrs.' explores subtle patriarchy in Indian households
Directed by Arati Kadav, Mrs. stars Malhotra as Richa, a dancer who is trapped in domesticity after marriage.
The film seeks to shed light on how patriarchy creeps into Indian homes in the most subtle ways.
"I have seen my friends go through similar challenges," Malhotra shared.
"Often, we think this is mundane and aren't even aware of [how it is actually a patriarchal practice]. I feel [showing it in] this film can empower someone watching it."
Career choices
Malhotra's filmography reflects her feminist identity
Malhotra added, "I have never shied away from calling myself a feminist."
"If I had felt any hesitation towards [establishing my identity], I wouldn't have done a Pagglait [2021] or Kathal [2023]. I didn't have the confidence to do Pagglait. I told Guneet [Monga Kapoor], 'I don't know if it's the right time for me to pick a film like this, whether I'll be able to shoulder this film.'
"But she and Umesh sir [Bist, director] had confidence in me."
Industry insights
Malhotra addressed misconceptions about feminism in Bollywood
Malhotra admitted that some female Bollywood actors shy away from calling themselves feminists because of the misconception that it is the same as "male-bashing" and will alienate their male audience.
Despite these hurdles, Malhotra continues to pick roles that reflect her core beliefs.
"I feel empowered doing films like Mrs and I want little girls to feel the same way when they watch me. These are small steps, but somebody has to take them."
The film premieres on February 7.
